Road to Publication: Slow Going

I added a new label for the blog called "Road to Publication" and tacked it onto a few of my previous posts. As an aspiring author I love to read about how other writers made it to the big time, i.e., a book on the shelves, as we say. Now, frankly, it's not been a very successful week for me. A couple of editors have already passed on the book, and I'm having serious doubts about its place in the publishing world. But as Felicity pointed out today, rejections are part of the journey. Every author has them somewhere in their past. And as much, much, more fun as it would be for me to wait until I'm an actual author and then look back and tell you the story, I figure it will mean even more if I document it along the way. So that's what that label is all about.

Now, the moment in my day that made up for this very slow and tear-filled road:

From Drew: Mom, I hope my daughter grows up to be like you someday. Because I can't imagine any person who would be more helpful to the world.

(I am not even kidding, People. Get yourself a 7-year-old immediately).

Could I borrow your 7 year old?? I could use some sweet comments in my life! :-)

He said that? And he's not paying it forward? Wow!

I don't know about paying it forward. He certainly knew he was giving me a very thoughtful compliment, and the only thing I can figure is that we had just been at the grocery store and were discussing why I use the reusable bags. So he may have been saying that I'm helpful to the earth. :)

Ugh, could you just BURST from the joy filling your soul from that comment?!?

Drew is so right. I often think that same thing about you. :) But I hadn't even imagined yet that you could have a granddaughter taking after you someday! Now that is something worth growing old for.

Serenity, Have you considered self-publication? Check out www.createspace.com. It is a subsidiary of Amazon. I now of people who are doing this and getting results.

Thanks for the tip, Tracy!

And to Molly, yes, heart bursting all over the place.

You're welcome, Serenity. Dan and Felicity might be interested in this site as well for their music. Would you share it with them?

Absolutely.

I'm traveling the same road as you: trying to get published. I'm much more savvy about the publishing biz from when I started. Nathan Bransford's blog has helped a lot. Don't you love it?

I have a 7 year old too. She says the sweetest things like yours. I love seeing myself through her eyes.

I'm enjoying your blog. I think I'll stay a while.

Yes, Nathan does a great job of informing us yet keeping us inspired, and he even makes us laugh in the process.

Serenity,

I just have to say again how much I enjoy reading your blog. You are a great writer no matter how many rejections you may encounter. At the writer's conference I went to they said that rejections are just a part of the process and in that process you become a stronger and better writer. Hang on and Jesus will get you there... in the mean time, keep on doin' what you're doin'! =)

Love,
Bonnelle

PS...it was so great to see you at Charity's shower!!

Would you look at that, I was just telling Mom that Drew is very intelligent and CUTE, and then I see proof in print.

Even without having met you in person, I know Drew is probably right. Don't lose hope! You are a beautiful writer.

I don't think I can lose heart after all, despite a close call this week. It's impossible to, though, with such encouragers! Thanks for popping by, Anne!

First time commenting though I read your posts often (& I'm not some whacko either) - Don't get discouraged. Your blog is thought provoking & very well written & I'm sure that your writing is top notch. My only suggestion is to start another project while this one makes the rounds (if you haven't already). Take it from this old goat - it'll all work out the way it should. HIS timing is always absolutely perfect.

By the way - Becky's book is really awesome & she's a terrific person besides. I hope she pulls your name from the hat. The story will make you smile. Hang in there.

Thank you, JaxPop! I hope I win Becky's book too, although I'll certainly buy one otherwise.

I'm glad you commented. Your advice and encouragement are much appreciated.
